Waypoints are best when you can plan them well in advance. Apps like Litchi can do it. You sit at home and plan flight route looking at the maps. Plan how would aircraft fly, where will camera face and what will be flying route etc. all this is done by placing waypoints on map and set parameters at each. Once all done, go to the sight and load the mission (collection of waypoints) to the aircraft and command it to fly. Aircraft follows the predetermined route and comes back to last waypoint and waits for the next instruction.
It's good for smooth video shooting and good for areas where one can't reach easily like behind a building, out of sight....
