Update. I've had the drone for two weeks now, and I *try* to fly every day, even if its only ~10 minutes (weather, time, daylight permitting).
I've mostly been flying around a lake behind my office building, and around the neighborhood at home. I try to film everything, but I haven't captured anything noteworthy or particularly pretty. I've stayed in P-mode so far, and haven't really had any close calls. Though I will admit that yesterday I did get my sticks mixed up and almost backed into a tree, over water no less.
I've gotten to ~400 feet vertical a few times, and I've maxed out lateral distance at roughly 1600 feet. Everything has been VLOS so far. Lots of interference here in the neighborhood.
Today I decided that I would hike up a hill close by and try to fly a POI around a water tower, but the access road was clearly posted with No Trespassing signs. So I was kind of bummed about that.
At this point I'm just looking for places near me I can fly - trying to conceive of things that might be interesting to film. There is a creek maybe a mile away - I've thought about flying the creek channel itself. But there are lots of overhanging branches and I'm not confident enough to risk it.
I've purchased a few accessories: memory cards, shade for the controller, and an extra battery. Next Saturday I'm going with a bump of jeep guys offroading, and I plan on bringing the phantom with me; hopefully I will find something to video.
