If your Phantom was half a mile away with obstacles,(trees) etc in the way, does it follow the same route home that you sent it on, same height etc

No. It will first ascend to the altitude you set in the DJI Pilot app (if it's lower than that). And, it'll then come straight back to the home point and land. If you press the throttle while it's ascending, it'll stop ascending and return to home immediately.

I didnt realise you had to set the height in the app, what height is best about 40 metres 120 feet

I always add about 50 feet to the tallest obstacle in my flying area.

    What height? That depends
Are you flying over grassy fields or a Redwood forest?
