Thoughts on this drone backpack?

I agree with your main idea, but I definitely wouldn't tell people it's camera equipment either. Bad guys who see drones as easy money see camera equipment as easier money, as they can sell the items faster. When they see a large bag and they think it is filled with camera equipment, I think it makes it a bigger target.

My suggestion is that your bag looks nothing like a drone or camera bag. Disguised it as something else somehow.

This isn't an real suggestion but more of a way out there hypothetical, but I think you'd want your drone (or camera) bag to look more like a diaper bag type backpack than a traditional drone (or camera) bag. Who wants to steal those?

And actually that's not a bad idea. I just looked some up and a lot look like my drone bag. Semi rigid. Multiple pockets. Just need to sew on some "baby" style patches to my bag, maybe some baby buttons like "World's Best Grandpa" or "It's a boy/girl/'yet to be determined gender neutral child'" (you know, for those who are sensitive about that stuff.). Have a pack of baby wipes sticking out of the side mesh pocket. I think I just found my new drone bag disguise!
Good point, but I'm rarely asked that question anyway. In 2yrs I've been asked once, by a backpacker. He thought it was a little large for the trail, as we were walking and talking about other things. Besides, my backpack is never out of arms reach anyway. I don't fear someone stealing my drone as much as someone calling authorities to snuff my flight plans, simply because it's obvious I'm carrying a drone. So I prefer a backpack that doesn't scream "DRONE". My new Mavic backpack is great, looks just like a regular lightweight backpack that millions care, 7lbs for Mavic, controller w/iPadMIni, 3 batteries and my DSLR.

For serious backpacking, I use the Rush 5.11 pack. I have a black one and a beige one, depending on whether I'm doing dirty desert work, or pro work on set. This gives me enough room to carry both the Phantom and the Mavic, carry a good amount of food and water, spare batteries and gear, and sits well on my back with good support and solid straps, plus lots of room to attach stuff on the outside like ground pad, tripods, etc.

You can get the same pack for a lot cheaper if you order the pack separate and make your own foam inserts, which I did to get a more optimal arrangement. There are a lot of color options too, including Camo for those outdoor film guys.
