I saw that on the news this morning and thought the same thing. One accident and lawmakers will come out in troves to pass legislation to prohibit, ban or severely control our ability to fly. There are some things in our favor, and that is that this was a gas powered helicopter, it was large (4' blades) and this guy was doing some pretty wild stunts that would be difficult to come even close to with the Phantom. My condolences to his family and friends. I do have to admit, if you look at his video's he was very talented and accomplished pilot.
Really sad. Familiarity or complacency? Some sort of equipment failure? We may never know. I don't see this bringing down additional heavy handed regulation upon us though. He was flying in an authorized location and innocent bystanders were not involved.
I've never understood the appeal of that sort of 3D flying, though I'm in awe of the skill and talent involved. Much prefer RC flying that approximates what a full size aircraft might do.
