This drone has been in the family a few years, how can I tell if it's registered

Registered with DJI or the FAA?

Three different things to look at here:

  • DJI wants you to register every drone with them before DJI Go will let you fly. If it is not registered, the app will ask you to do so.
  • If you are flying as a recreational pilot, then you don't specifically need to register each drone. You do need to register yourself and then put your FAA registration number on the drone before you fly it.
  • If you are flying commercially under Part 107, then you must register yourself and each drone that you fly. The registration number for that specific drone must be put on the drone prior to flying.
It does not matter if the drone has been previously registered with the FAA. If it is yours now, you still need to register yourself. If it has not changed hands and you are not sure about FAA registration, it does not hurt to register again. Especially if you don't see the FAA registration number on the drone.
