I got tired of crash after crash. I destroyed my gimbal when my Phantom hit a giant light pole at a ballpark. I finally figured out I was losing satellite reception during flight. (When you start with only six, there's not much leeway)
My Phantom would just get loose and I wasn't noticing I'd lost GPS lock. I also figured out I would lose reception of at least one more satellite when I hit the video record button! I almost always had just the minimum sats for GPS lock, so I was afraid to fly. I went looking for help.

I found Jeremy at USdronerepair to repair my camera gimbal. When I told Jeremy about my GPS issue, he came up with an upgrade plan. He replaced the stock GPS antennae with a heavier one; a +3db signal increase. He shielded the GPS dome and the GPS lead, paying special attention to the connecter. He added RF chokes where needed on other leads. Jeremy pulled a few other tricks while he was in there; i.e. heat sink mod, etc.
I got it back today. I fired it up and immediately locked 11 satellites. My GPS Satellite app told me there were 11 satellites available and 2 were below 15 degrees, almost on the horizon. Here's the kicker, I was in the house!!! I never got more than one or two in the house.
Eleven satellites in the house and no dropouts when I hit the record button!
By the way, I can't see where my gimbal j-bar had a 30 degree bend and the camera works great. Jeremy also checked my motor rpms and thermographed each ESC checking for thermal issues. He puts a lot of heart into each repair. He is the Phantom Whisperer.
Find him at http://www.usdronerepair.com and on facebook where he posts interesting repairs.

If you have the tools, some foil and packing tape.. you can do it yourself like many others on this forum.

LOL Phantom whisperer!!
Sounds like he did a great job :)

You've now inspired me to hurry up and order a GPS antenna to replace stock.
I will also look into these RF chokes you speak of...Next time you have the shell off can you take some pics of the chokes please ? Never heard of them.. just having a look on google now..

I don't really have a GPS issue after I did the foil mod, but there is still room for a slight improvement.. Would love to get just 1 sat in my house, for no otther reason than just cause. I no with other GPS type devices I never get anything in my house, so its a house issue as opposed to Phantom. Also fiddling along is always fun and the gps antenna is like $6 so can't go wrong.

Kind of Jelous of the service you got. I've been to a few hobby / "phantom specialist" shops in Melbourne Australia and no one is all that great. One "specialist" did a worse job soldering that I would of done. I would be embarrased if I was him and it was part of my job. ... Would love someone to check rpm and ESCs etc etc... but all the people I've been to have no clue and are to arrogant.

Do you mind telling us how much all that set you back ? Or maybe just a rough indication ?

Thanks

He got a holiday special. There where quite a few other little tricks that went into place to give Jonny the best flying Vision I could. As he said his gimbal was a mess also. I dont want to disclose any prices but all "total" it was less than half the cost of a new gimbal from DJI. His GPS reception was out of this world, the moment I tested it I knew I found a winning combination.

I have always made it clear I have never cared for putting the aluminum in the top cover. But I do feel differently about the cooper sheet that has protective covering on it. If I find a link to some of it I would use it on my quad.

Thanks for that Burlbark, and fair enough about the price, doesn't really matter anyways as I am probably like 20,000km away.
You are the fellow that actually did all the work ??

Frank it took me a few trials to make it work perfectly with the aluminum. I am actually using this weatherproof stuff. One side is sticky and its got a 2-3mm squishy bit in the middle then the other side is aluminum. I think one of the most important parts is making sure as much of the cable is under the aluminum as possible (or maybe even just the stock one) With mine ithe cable has like 5cm sticking out. It also made a difference putting the aluminum up the arms up to the screw in the middle. Not sure why that made a difference, but it did lol.

Yep I did the work. I do around 20 a week of various manufacturers, sometimes more, sometimes less. I love it.

Would you mind sharing which RF chokes you used please ?
I had a look on google and have an idea what they are now, but now entirely sure which ones to use ? The ones I found look like they are foot thick cables like power cables or monitors etc etc.. Not a little 3-4 cable like the gps.

What would you recomend doing to version 3 other than updating the GPS unit?
Everything. There is still allot to improve on.
Yeah I am sure there will be. Had the Phantom out today and it was on 12-13 sats so happy with that. if its ever below 8 I will be looking in to mod it.

I've done the shielding modification on My P2V+, which has given some GPS reception improvement sometimes, but still far from ideal. Can anyone provide the brand/model/source for the +3dB "heavier" antenna unit, and is that a user-doable replacement procedure? Thanks.

Very easy mod. Did mine the other day. You just have to trim out the plastic rails under gps chip to make room for it

Changing out the GPS antenna for a higher level dbi antenna, what was the results. How may satellites are you getting now vs the stock GPS antenna?
