I'm getting more confused, don't get me wrong I've flown every kind of r/c plane over the years, even put my go pro in my big bird but this phone stuff is confusing. I'll have no problem flying a quad if I can just get all the tech stuff figured out, after reading the manual online I had more questions. I looked up Ipad
mini 2 on apple web site, when you say cellular do you mean I get the phone and the pay extra for cellular (so in the middle of no where I can get a satellite signal to go online) or no cell plan and just bootleg signal like at coffee shops or something like when I want to go online? Is a cellular plan a full time dedicated connection I pay extra for? I did not see a more expensive model with cellular capability all the ipad
mini 2's were the same cept for color. By the way I've been online since 1996 but never messed with a smart phone.
Hmm.. sorry to make you more confused.
Forget "cell phone" all together. Erase that from this conversation.
The DJI Phantom 3 has the capability to use GPS in multiple ways.
The drone itself has a GPS build in.
It can ALSO receive GPS coordinate from your device (android or iOS).
You CAN fly WITHOUT any of the android or iOS or any other tablet or handheld device.
The iOS and Android devices can run applications (i.e. DJI Go, Lichi, Autopilot, etc) that gives you ADDITIONAL functions and features such as taking photos, taking videos, flying waypoints, flying certain patterns, set settings for your drones and cameras in general.
SOME of these features provided by the application (DJI Go, Lichi, etc) that runs on your iOS or Android can upload the GPS location of your iOS or Android devices (assuming your iOS or Android devices has GPS build in). There's the GPS unit on the drone itself, and there's the GPS (if you have it) on your device.
All modern phone have GPS build in.
WiFi ONLY version of iPad (mini/air/etc) DO NOT have GPS build in, and therefore can not provide accurate location of where the device (NOT the DRONE) is located.
Cellular version of iPad (mini/air/etc) HAS GPS build in and therefore CAN provide accurate GPS location of where the device is located (NOT the DRONE location. The drone has a build in GPS and therefore is aware of its own location at all times provided it has good GPS lock)
Hope this is more clear.
