AMA insurance is like $60 / year.. A part of your membership fee.
In Canada we need additional coverage amounting to $800+.. Depending on your accreditation, skill and flight time.

This is incorrect. The AMA insurance covers you anywhere as long as fly in accordance to their safety rules.
