Firmware updates for which component?

New user confused about updating firmware. There seems to be 3 separate components (Quad-copter/Controller/Extender) Do each get firmware up-dates?

Firmware updates are usually available for the Copter and Controller and more recently a P330CB update (another component) which addressed an issue with the gimbal assembly.
Some people advise not to upgrade the firmware because of issues they are experiencing, I have done all updates and not had any issues. Some of the latest firmware updates restrict flying around airports & also restricts the descent speed to 2m/sec to reduce the risk of VRS(Vortex RIng State) which can cause the copter to fall 'through' its own prop wash or turbulence created by the props.

Overview：
a) Central board firmware updated to: v1.0.1.31.
Major New Features:
a) Fixed iOSD compatibility issues.

I wish they were more specific.
