I downloaded the latest firmware for my P3A and it appears in vlc format/opened with vlc. Is this ok to use for the update?

Your computer is just showing you that it is guessing that it's a file that it would use VLC to open.
But if you tried, VLC wouldn't make any sense of the file.
The firmware download is a zip file containing a folder with two files ... a .bin file (the firmware) and a pdf with instructions.
Open the zip file and this is what's there.

Look at what the file is .. not what your computer thinks it should use to open it.
It will be a .bin file - nothing to do with VLC
Try opening it with VLC and you'll see that VLC has nothing to do with the file.
    Don't worry about it.
Just use it according to the instructions.
