I've watched several videos on calibrating the compass. The DJI videos show that you rotate in a CW direction when calibrating but I saw another video showing rotating CCW. Does it matter?

Doesn't matter. I've done the horizontal rotation one way, and the vertical the other.....so just do it whichever direction you want..and they don't have to be the same.
Also-I don't hold my Phantom at arms length away from my body like in the instructions. I just pick it straight up, and turn it 360 degree's by holding the arms, then turn it nose down(looking at the light), and do the same thing-by holding the landing gear/arms-works fine. You may have to rotate the vertical(nose down)slightly more than 360 degree's-just keep rotating until the green light goes out...done.
