Does the phantom 2 battery stop charging once full and is ok to leave charging unattended/over night?
Thanks!

Hey calipilot,

You should never leave one of these LiPo type batteries on charge overnite.

In fact I would never leave it charging unattended.

I'm not an alarmist or saying 'the sky is falling', but please Google LiPo battery care and use.

They are amazing but can be dangerous if not respected.

The DJI aircraft firmware and charger seem to address the major points but understanding the LiPo chemisrty and power density.

'Google' them (LiPos) to learn more.

Cheers!
R. William

Thanks

I am familiar with lipo's, having owned a f550, but was curious if anything changed when DJI upgraded the phantom batteries for the phantom 2.

The light on the P2 charger goes from red to green when its done so one could reasonable assume it was in standby. It is a smart battery with a 'brain' in the battery itself.
BUT, as mentioned one should NEVER leave a lipo battery charging unattended. They have been know to burn down homes/garages/rooms. Not worth the risk.

Just to clarify things there is no record of a P2 series battery going on fire as far as the community here can tell. By their nature there is potential built in. Take precautions, absolutely! OT - My wife's electric steam iron went on fire once so basically anything can!

Personally I'm not so sure I'm up for staring out a charging battery in the shed for 2+ hours. Just me though and my risk!

You don't see a lot of talk about dynamite explosions either, but it sure does explode. It is careful handling that prevents this just like our batteries. P2 batteries have the same chemistry inside them as other lipo's. They are a potential fire/explosion hazard in your home and I don't think anyone should downplay that fact.

Here are some examples. It can and does happen...

I agree, no downplay, just P2 batteries in paticular seem to have a good safety record - all I'm saying, however complacency I am not advocating. I charge in a fire retardant bag and store in a metal box.

The P2 batteries are new so we will have to give them time to see the track record but I agree with you, so far so good. Being so many new people who have never owned or handles/cared for lipo batteries are getting into the hobby it is alway good to remind people of the dangers of such a battery. I charge in a can or bag and I store them in an ammo can which is water & air tight. You can get them at Army surplus stores in various sizes if you don't have any around. I padded the inside to cushion the batteries.

As written in the Phantom 2 manual.

DJI Intelligent Battery Functions
(1) Balance Charging Automatically balance the voltage of each battery cell during charging.
(2) Capacity Display Display the current battery level.
(3) Communicating
The main controller communicates with the battery via communication ports
for battery voltage, capacity, current and other information.
(4) Overcharging Protection
Charging stops automatically when the battery voltage reaches 12.8V to
prevent overcharging damage.

(5) Over Discharging
Protection
Discharging stops automatically when the battery voltage reaches 8.4V to
prevent over discharging damage.
(6) Short Circuit Protection Automatically cuts off the power supply when a short circuit is detected.
(7) Sleep Protection
The battery will enter sleep mode after 10 minutes of inactivity to save
power. The static current is 10nA in sleep mode when the battery is
powered on without connecting to other devices.
(8) Charging Temperature
Detection
The battery will charge only when its temperature is within 0℃~55℃. If the
battery temperature is out of this range, the battery will stop charging.

How do you store the batteries in the phantom(smart batteries). How do you get them to 3.8 per cell?

You must check periodically your battery if it is in storage. I stored 2 p2 batteries as rarely fly it. After one close to one year. One that had 3 flights is ok. One that is new and still in the box is dead. So do not buy spare battery if you do not need. Do not assume what come out from factory is ok. There are alot of dji batteries are defective. Do not buy from store that has low turnover as battery might be stored for too long oen the shelf. This is not a smart battery. I do not buy quad that comes with proprietary battery these days. So be care full when storing your battery if storage voltage is too low, with discharge rate of 1% per month, it could be dead with few month. Battery cutoff does not work. Do not store when state of charge is at 100%. It will get puffed within few weeks if not in days. So keeps your spares battery as per your requirements
