CALL FROM THE FAA

To the FAA guy who called thank you for being so nice. So today my father got a call from the FAA saying that I have to remove some of my videos, such video as me flying over my town which isn't allowed for some reason, that I had to remove the video of my fathers property that I have record (commercial use? I didn't charge him so?) he talked about things I have posted on the forms. He talked about company's I've recorded for (without the drone) I guess he was warning me that I couldn't use the drone in my company videos. The reason I got a call is because some one on the forms "complained", I do not know who complained, I'm sure they will never tell me but I made this post to warn everyone that this isn't the nice private community that we think it is, also be careful on what nice videos you try to share with the world, they might get you in trouble. The FAA is mailing me a letter, I will post a picture of it when I receive it.
Without proof and id code or number, i would disregard this. You need to get written proof a phone call sounds like someone screwing with you. Personally thats what i think?

I have 2 F.A.A. Certificates and have been involved in aviation for over 30 years. One of my closest friends is an F.A.A. inspector. I spoke with him about drones after this thread was started. He told me that not a day goes by that they don't receive a report from ATP's about near misses with drones. They usually occur when the aircraft is on final approach. I asked him how the pilots see the drone when they are doing 200Kts or so. He said that it is when it goes screaming past the windshield they see it. Real or imagined it doesn't matter. It is the perception that causes the reality. He also told me that they do not have the manpower to follow up on all of those reports. That they usually turn it over to the local police. I have never perceived the F.A.A. as an enemy. They are the ones who try to keep the public safe and regulate a huge industry. They implement rules for the greater good and not for the individual. As I have read the posts in this forum, it has become very very clear that there are too many people flying these drones who need a real attitude adjustment. I can't believe that some of the simplest concepts aren't understood before someone flies one. And the attitude that the Government is out to get you through the F.A.A. is ridiculous. When you fly your Phantom or whatever you fly, you have a responsibility to insure that you are safe and within the rules and guidelines. Put your attitudes in a car on the highway and see what happens. When I fly my Phantom, I never forget that all laws of physics apply and I insure that in the event of a failure, there will not be any property damage or no one will be injured. I hope that as more and more people buy drones, and get involved in this "hobby" they will act in a mature manner, fly responsibly, and not regress into a 12 year old mentality.

This has been an interesting thread for sure & I waiting to see the FAA letter, but I'm more concerned about the attitude of folks like WetDog. Why does a band "need" a 747? Well why does WetDog "need" a Phantom. Why does WetDog need a savings account? Wouldn't that money be better served help the poor that sitting in a bank account. Sir that need question is a very slippery slope. I would encourage everyone to stay off that slope before you find yourself on the receiving end of the question.

If you are not doing anything in violation of the FAA rules than I would wait for proof.
That being said there seems to be many folks getting calls from the FAA. There are most likely representatives from the FAA and Homeland Security on this and other forums. Don't post activity that will draw their attention.

Thanks for sharing that info!

It was likely a local FAA FSDO inspector. He may simply enjoy you tube like many here. He saw it while looking at you tube. It was flight over a populated area, it had a real estate for sale number within the footage, he judged the height based on known local elevations, yada yada.

Or he received a complaint and then all of the above happened.

Same process as he would do if he was looking at submitted photo evidence.

He may even be sympathetic or feel his time is better used doing real work but he decided to give a courtesy call as a heads up, stop it before he would be forced to follow up on it an issuing fines.
If they're going after YT videos that are filming above "populated areas", the gubmint could solve the unemployment problem and hire thousands of FAA YT investigators to round up all the felons committing such heinous crimes.

The H.R. 4441 bill moving through Congress would change the definition of a micro drone to <2kg. What will the Spooks have to do with all that extra time after watching their porn? Really, don't these bureaucRATS have anything better to do?

In the meantime, let's allow millions of who-knows-what invade the country without any scrutiny, many of which have no good intent once here.

The reality is the NAS is being prepared for commercial UAS use. Big Drone will rule the airways and flights over dense populated areas will be considered "safe". ShAmazon and Google will have the last word. Your toy OTOH is a danger to the survival of humanity.

The FAA broke the law. You ok with that?

Homeland Security on this and other forums.

Paranoia... The Department of Homeland Security does not give a rip about any of the things in this post. Simply do not care.

Curious as to follow up. This is not how the Feds work. They'll come to your door with ID, official letterhead stationery, etc. Someone just BS'd you.

If I worked for the FAA and was looking for a YouTube Drone Owner's phone number, the first place I'd look is in the Registation Database.

They got your credit card and phone number, Sagebrush?
If you worked for the FAA you wouldn't have time to mess with the average drone pilot. They have more important things to do. I won't believe it until I see the letter.

I don't believe the FAA did or said anything to the OP. He's getting trolled. Many of you are buying into it absent any verifiable information. There are a lot of paranoid people on this board.. A bunch. I won't believe a word of it until I see the letter. I have said it before. The chances of an encounter with the FAA is very very unlikely. It is simply about numbers. I'm not saying you should be a dolt and fly recklessly, I am saying don't subscribe to the "drone" hysteria.

Have fun, follow the guidelines and post the pictures and videos. That's why we bought these in the first place right.

Generally speaking, Police, FAA Inspectors, etc. usually enforce law as they come across it or seek out(investigate) contravention of law and in this case Regs.

Everyone should know that hobby flying is just that and commercial is intent to make money or receive some compensation/pay/gain.

In addition we are to not fly over congested/built up areas, over people over 400 ft, etc or do commercial flight without approval. Apparently and admittedly he did.

If an FAA inspector saw it or received a complaint he would act on it.

All those are facts. Time will determine the final tally on authenticity of the call. Regardless of authenticity or even penalty the video indicated contravention of the proper use of a hobby drone.

Much of the issue isn't even what was done as most folk, authorities included, see it as a toy for fun and generally look the other way until something happens, the authorities get a complaint, or it is videoed and posted.

No different than videoing oneself drunk driving, including DL # then posting the video on youtube and you getting a call from the POPO.

Or being out on bail for weapons charges and then being stupid enough to pose for facebook picture afterwards with a gun in your hand and post it.

I remember here, a pilot doing spins(outside of formal training) in a SE cessna with a passenger in contravention of flight regs. He then posted the video on youtube. Well guess what?

Seems clear to me it is foolish to conduct oneself unlawfully, place others in danger and then video the "crime" and post it to the public.

That is the issue not, whether the phone call was authentic........
