Is it necessary to have the WiFi on while flying?

No, the connection to the controller is via a cable. WiFi (or cellular) connection may be useful if you want to download maps in real time, but those can be cached for offline use anyway.

I would consider airplane mode when flying. WiFi also takes a bit more processor and the device will continue to search.

With a cell carrier enabled tablet you may get a email or other interrupt while flying.
