What's the purpose of the GoPro USB Connection?

I have a question that I am hoping someone can answer.

On the Phantom 2 with Senmuse H3-3D Gimbal, other than providing some basic control to the gimbal, there doesn't seem to be any need to connect to the camera. I can't turn record on or off from the controller. So why do I need the connection?

i believe you can use it for video output when attaching FPV equipment
