Video: Fitted my Phantom v1 into a Phantom 2 shell (easy!)

Re: Video: Fitted my Phantom v1 into a Phantom 2 shell (easy

I just upgraded to P1.5 and I am getting 14 1/2 minutes flight time before the first flash of red in the LED, flying FPV with OSD using 2 Dinogy 2800s in parallel.

I am very happy with the results.

Thanks for the vid.

I forgot to mention one more very important mod that I added to the P1.5: painting the front half of the shell a glaring orange. I cannot distinguish orientation on an all-white Phantom if it is more than 50 meters from me. With the front half painted orange, however, I can now spot it reliably at quite a distance.

Care to post a picture of yours? I'm interested to see how the orange looks!

Correction: I used PlastiDip ....a ... paint that gives a plastic-like coating. Next time, however, I'll try a harder paint as this one scuffs easily and shows dirty fingerprints. I "masked" with ordinary clear tape -- won't do that again, either. It took longer to peel the tape off than to prepare and paint the Phantom. Still, I'm pleased with the effectiveness of the bright color for long distance orientation.

Whoa! Thats high visibility!!

Which cable does one use to run 2 batts in parallel?

Say I have 1 2800mah mad dog and 1 2200 stock battery. Can I run them together with the xt60 splitter? Will that harm anything because they are different batteries?

Also whats the LED battery extender cable called?

I foun these items:

http://www.dronefly.com/product-p/vision-shell.htm
http://www.dronefly.com/product-p/visio ... -board.htm
http://www.dronefly.com/product-p/iosd-combo.htm
http://www.helipal.com/dji-naza-m-v2-led-module.html
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... _Pack.html

I'm missing any can bus cable? Is the Hub necessary? Or what would be the alternative to not use the Hub?

Can I do P2 Board, iOSD, GS, and FPV transmitter, before changing the shell? I'm in Argentina and I'll need to get people to bring me the stuff and I don't know if I'll be able to do all at once.

The Canbus HUB is not needed, and all the canbus cables you need will be included with the components. The FPV HUB may be useful for you depending on what FPV transmitter you decide to use.

I would strongly suggest waiting to connect all those components until you have the new shell to install them in, otherwise you'll likely end up having to re-do a lot and it'll make the install much more complicated.

Dual Pulse 2700 battery test

OI Photography gave me a great deal on a pair of Pulse 2700 batteries, so I've finally had a chance to test my P1.5 on something other than a stock DJI P2 battery.

First of all, in order to fit the batteries into the P2 battery bay I had to use a Dremel tool to grind down a bit of plastic from the P2 battery connector. It intruded just a few millimeters into the left side of the bay but was enough to block the Pulse from entering on that side. (If you don't have a Dremel this could also be filed down.)

With the plastic obstacle removed the fit was still a bit too tight. I could cram the batteries into the bay but the slightest puffing would have created a serious jam. The only solution was to remove all but the innermost plastic wrappers that encase the batteries. This took five minutes of careful work with a very sharp knife.

Since I've only flown P2 batteries until now I don't have a battery door. Fortunately I have a large roll of gaffer's tape. If you've never used gaffer's tape I highly recommend it. Think of it as non-destructive duct tape -- grips like crazy but comes off without leaving nasty scars or bits of adhesive.

I used a dual XT60 adapter plug to connect the batteries to the XT60 lead I'd installed when I did the 1.5 conversion. That leaves quite a tangle of battery cables and balance leads dangling outside the quad. What the heck -- I slapped a large piece of tape over everything and was ready to go.

Miss Piggy was fully loaded with GoPro, Ground Station, etc -- easily 1450 grams. The take-off voltage was 12.5. A stiff wind with frequent gusts, flying gps in my usual conservative style, about 1/3 hovering.

The first red led blinks came at 11:30 minutes, then all green, then another red flash just before landing at 12:00.

The batteries were both at 22% immediately after landing (mildly warm) and rebounded to 24 and 26% after resting for about 15 minutes.

One battery recharged at 81%, the other 78%.

I'm looking forward to another test flight once the wind calms down. My guess is that if the Phantom isn't struggling to maintain a GPS hold that I'll gain at least another minute in the air.

Needless to say, I am quite pleased. And I'd be even more pleased if I hadn't already invested in three DJI P2 batteries! ;)

Re: Video: Fitted my Phantom v1 into a Phantom 2 shell (easy

Awesome GearLoose! Maybe you can sell the P2 batteries at a good price to someone? And then buy cheaper batteries?

Thanks IO.

What do you think about the prices of that stuff and the stores?
Is the Naza version of the Phantom important here?
What FPV set up would you recommend for a P1.5?

Its cheaper here:

and its a great store. Fast shipping. Just thought you should know.

Oh, good one HoverMan. Thanks!

Any suggested FPV set up for a Phantom 1.5?

Any suggested FPV set up for a Phantom 1.5?

I just bought my P2 shell from there ($50) and FREE shipping!! I thought it was a mistake. Love that store!! :D

Now if someone will just tell me what the cable is called that extends the LED (8 pin I think?) I can order that and start this project.

4 pin for the USB/LED. That is assuming you aren't doing what I did and creating 2 LED's

Best bet is to buy some Arduino Jumper Cables (really useful for all sorts of RC stuff).... these can be torn down into a strip of 4 and used directly (with a little excess) or just buy some terminal crimps, cut one end of the Arduino cable to length, re-crimp and swap the cap over. Easy peasy :)

Aduino Jumper Cables: http://www.ebay.com/itm/40PCS-Dupont-wi ... 2a25285210
Terminal Crimps (Seems in the USA you guys call them everything other than that!): http://www.ebay.com/itm/50x-Female-Dupo ... 20ea40e682

Nice to see new people are still cracking on with the 1.5!

Thanks D3wey. Seems I'm going to need to buy your 1.5 door with the LED mount here pretty soon.

Are you kidding? I see people talk about them all the time now, on FB and elsewhere too! I'd call it "Dewey's movement" if that didn't have such negative connotations

I recently picked up a mint condition FC40 for a song and I'm in the midst of converting it now and it'll be up for sale soon

Re: Video: Fitted my Phantom v1 into a Phantom 2 shell (easy

I wish I could find people in my area that had DJI stuff. I think it might be fun to meet up and fly. Maybe not together, I'd imagine that could pose an interference issue.

Whats the largest forum? Maybe I could ask if there's any other Louisville, KY people there.

I see every other club up on FaceBook except a DJI Phantom 1.5 Club... You and Dewey should start one and moderate it...

It was probably during a Dewey movement when i thought about the idea in the first place so it would be kinda fitting.... now lets all raise the tone

You can get so much for the money second hand these days... might have to look out for an FC40 myself... i feel with all my recent fixed wing efforts its time to get back to my routes with some crazy Phantom based project. No idea what though!

Yeah that is a good point... and lets be honest there are more like 30 clubs on FB for every DJI product! - Our club has so much class it doesn't need advertising. Though a secret handshake could work.

Re: Video: Fitted my Phantom v1 into a Phantom 2 shell (easy

LOL I admit half my interest in starting a group would be just so I can turn down applications.

"Nope, sorry, you have a 1.4, not quite up to our standards. Sarawuth or GTFO."
