How far can I fly in my subdivision with two story houses before I get out of radio signal range?

There's no way to answer that without trying it.
Every site/location is different and can vary with time of day as well.

Well, obviously you want to stay well above the two story houses, but as your bird gets farther away, the houses will tend to come between you and it. My experience has been that any structure degrades the signal significantly. I have had good luck in your situation flying as high as practicle and standing in an unobstructed area (sometimes out in the street) to get as clear a shot as possible.
