Protection against crashes

What's a good way to go....those horrible stories about crashing and then breaking the gimbal and camera are putting fear in me.
Adding foam to landing? How thick? Or other idea's?

I don't want prop protection/ bumpers by the way. I can live with replacing those.

Prop guards maybe, nothing else will be worth the weight.
