OK to upgrade Firmware?

I have a new P3P and will be using a K1 Shield.

Is it OK to perform the Firmware upgrade before "activating" with DJI?

Update: I have received advice, on good authority, that I should activate the bird with DJI prior to performing any FW Upgrade.
