It was difficult knowing how close I was to the water because I was in a cliff flying at -95 feet from take off.

Nice!
Probably an effective way to shot surfers is to use "Course Lock" to simulate a cable camera.
In this way you'll have more freedom and focus on tracking the surfer.
My two cents..
