I've seen case where while performing RTH suddenly the P4 stops dues to false obstacle avoidance detection entering in conflict with RTH. Inexisting obstacle causing logic unable to identify pattern so no manoeuver to overcome and just little forward moves attempts and stops iterations.
Odd situation for Flight Controller but doesn't give up and at some point auto landing is triggered (not sure if in that case it's the intelligent battery telling to do or the FC itself).
