Kentucky Drone Shooting Follow Up Report

It's the nature of ALL news. Bad news sells, good news doesn't. They are a business and sell advertising to survive. If you watch a lot of news, the world seems really bad. Stop watching and go out and LIVE!

Have any of you ever shot a shotgun? Tested range? To pull a uav or a live bird down at 250' requires as much or more luck than skill (not saying it isn't possible, but highly unlikely). Typical shotgun range with lead bird shot is about 100' (35 yards), with no guarantees at that range. Patterns deform pretty rapidly after that, so unless the guy was shooting steel through a fixed choke AND got rather lucky, I'd wager the drone was well under 150' and probably closer to the 80'-100' the shooter described. Has anyone seen any reports describing elevation change between takeoff point and the residence? I couldnt tell from google earth, but I wonder if there was either a decent elevation change or some other explanation.
Turkey and goose loads can easily go 50 yards. I killed a wild turkey last year at 62 yards. Some of the newer tungsten ammo and the resin shot wad ammo (such as Longbeard XR) could bring down a phantom at 60-70 yards.
I find it irresponsible and stupid to see somebody making their UAV into a gun platform. Just fuels the "anti's" fire.

Read the entire article. The guy is an idiot. Still mouthing off. So stupid he has no idea he's compromising his case. So convinced he's right, he cannot even conceive what was wrong about it. Keep it up, fool. You're going to get it good, and it needs to be broadcast on ALL the networks about what will happen when you get to feeling your man-juice and do something stupid. I'll predict now that he'll get 2 years, suspended, restitution around $2000, and some hefty fines.

Looks pretty high above any yard. Even if there is a 4k copy doubt it saw much fine details in backyards below.

The shooter and several other witnesses claim at one point he was much lower over his yard and then went higher before being shot down. Their version claims the video has been edited to omit that part.

I'm just the messenger.

That could be true. Still not going to go well for the shooter. On that account he was not longer in fear of anything. So no matter how close it might have been before he shot, it was high up.

Adds to the shooters legal problems.if it was heading higher, it was most likely leaving. Kind of like shooting someone in the back as they're fleeing. :D

Last I heard the charges against the shooter were dropped. The "victim" says he intends to pursue the case and feels the decision was wrong.
Personally, I think the judge is unfit to sit on a bench. Using a gun to shoot down ANY aircraft rather than call law enforcement authorities shows a significant bias or deficiency in cognitive abilities (on the part of the accused AND judge). Neither good traits of someone presiding over a court of law.

I can only imagine now the number of vigilantes who will use this case as a defense and point to it after they also shoot down a drone. This judge basically declared open season on drones.

This cannot stand.

Don't fly over other peoples yards, people have the right to expect a fair amount of privacy on or over here property, fly over your own property or out in the open away from housing areas,i own several quads and still agree with the shooter.
Should have threw rocks at it and nothing probably would have been said, the firearm had a lot to do with the situation.

Didn't the quads log show it was never below 200' or something in that range? If so, do you still agree joe blow should be discharging firearms randomly into the sky? I believe the guy was reckless, even if it did fly close to him. Vigilante law is so messy.

Yes, it's crazy to think it's okay to use a firearm to shoot at a drone! And I'm a gun nut!! (that's the liberal's definition of a gun nut, anyone who actually owns a gun)

How is flying a drone an invasion of privacy? How do they know it had a camera. And even if it did, can they prove it was recording. Too many unanswered questions to actually make a smart decision on this.
