Been thinking about filming rock climbing. I am concerned that the bird would loose many GPS sattelites as you approach the cliff face. Thoughts?? Thanks
Very likely, unpredictable too as satellites come and go in the half sky it can 'see'.
Also updraughts, downdraughts caused by wind hitting the vertical face, and sun heating the rock can give very strong thermals intermittently.
It will loose or not get enough satellites with even a moderate cliff. Before you go flying in a high risk environment like that I would suggest you practice, practice and more practice with ATTI mode until it becomes second nature. You can get strange wind patterns too close to a cliff so if you are in atti you need to be very aware and definitely don't attempt it with even moderate winds. Having said all that you only get the experince under your belt by doing it and everything is a risk, just minimise it and take it slow and steady. Oh... and have fun!
I had the same fears. Due to multipath my phone gps was sometimes showing I was somewhere else so I decided not to use gps mode.
I think it is a risky environment as others have said however obviously you can safely remain above the face for filming a part of the climb.
