600 meters......Wow!!! Here I thought I was being a daredevil by taking mine up to 260 meters. LOL!!! Did you have a strong FPV signal up that high?

I use Velcro on both the battery and the frame as well. That and the tie-down straps, and nothing has moved.... yet.

BTW, I saw the mention of flying higher than 400ft (130m) in altitude. I thought that the FAA restricted us to below 400ft AGL over the entire US? I have my upper altitude limit of the Nava set to 125m so that's my upper ceiling. Did I miss something? Is my "noobie" showing?

You are correct but if you read enough of these post you'll see that I'm the "Nervous Nanny" that flies low compared to the other daredevils in here. LOL!!!

While the FAA's ability to enforce that (or anything with UAV's) is in limbo right now following a ruling this past week, 400ft is what they advise and is a good rule of thumb when in populated areas or anywhere else within a few miles of an airport. Many people do fly their Phantoms and even 550's higher than that, and when you're out in the country more the risk is far less...but you should always have an idea of who you might be sharing the airspace with and plan to limit your flights accordingly.

I usually keep all my height limits set to 120m (~122m = 400ft) and rarely even get close to that.

What Ol Photography sed and:

I can't find where the FAA has restricted that and it seems no one else can, either - in another thread it was revealed the ruling is a UK ruling and it doesn't apply to the US. There are restrictions for model aircraft near airfields (at least the general rules apply), Nuke plants, and stuff like that... generally what the normal aviation crowd has.

There is a good discussion about this here: http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-b ... s/19485832

And I just added Velcro to both battery and frame and took it out for a test run. Much nicer... that battery isn't going to move.

Yes - I was using the stock whip on the aircraft and a good skew planar on the Diversity. There was breakup when the aircraft was directly above me so I moved it out a ways and it was very good. Altitude is your friend when doing FPV. It could have gone a lot farther (up and probably out) but I wanted to stay inside my general area... and also have enough battery to get it down.

I lost it in the sky after looking down at the monitor so the last several minutes was FPV only - normally the airframe is big enough that I can see it almost anywhere within my flying bubble.

ladykate, have you added LED lights to your F550? I did and added a on/off switch so I don't have to have them on in the daytime. My F550 looks great all lit up in the sky at night. I used these two sources for my lights.

I did - made it switchable so I didn't have to run it all the time. Used one of the disks available from eBay. First flight and four of the LEDs were burned out. sigh... It goes back in the mail today. I have some of the strip lights that Ol Photography linked - and I have some vanity lights for a car - they are heavier and have a focusing lense but won't burn out. Seriously thinking about mounting the car version on the left and right boom tips.

Wow...mine are doing great. Are u running 3S or 4S? Most of those lights are only for 2S-3S, unless u run a BEC. I'm only running 3S.

Using 3s. Gonna put a 1/4 watt 1000 ohm in series on next one. I like the effect but don't like the life. :)

sittin here all jelly reading about you fellas and your big boy quads... I'll be in the club next season- for now, I will live vicariously through you'uns.

Thanks Chief! I'd never seen cooperuav.com before, always like to have as many sources as possible in my list.

ladykate, I'm not sure why your LED disc failed like that (even just a few emitters)...mine hasn't given me an issue on the Phantom or 550.

I've tested a number of aftermarket lighting systems of various types over the past couple of months, I plan to post details/pics on all of them as soon as I've selected my final choice (which I think I have). I also just purchased 2 different types of remote-controlled switches for accessories such as lights or anything on a 12v circuit, pics/details on the way as soon as I test them both tonight.

Here is the LED disk I was talking about: http://www.ebay.com/itm/380707901411?ss ... 1497.l2649

I should have suspected something because when I tested it, it was warm and LEDs should not normally get warm. I almost suspect they gave me a 5 volt version. In any case, I'm getting it replaced.

I am most interested in your remote control switches. It would be very nice to switch from the radio and not worry about plugging and unplugging.

BTW: That chewed up battery was OK this morning and still had juice left in it. I retaped it with stranded tape and then electrician's tape. Will charge it (outside) tonight and see if I can start a fire. ;-} If it holds a charge, I'm thinking about reusing it. What is the worst thing that could happen?

Hiway: the F550 is fun to play with - and fun to fly. Shorter flight times but you get a lot of enjoyment fiddling with it and seeing your work fly... or... not fly as the case may be. It takes great video with the Zenmuse and GoPro and is quite stable. Hurry up and join the club!

Hey OI,

Just a question... What Landing Gear do you have on your f550?

I don't think I read any post that made a reference to it... My apologies, If you have...

Who knows, that was (p)ages ago :D

This is the one I use, and love: http://www.aeroxcraft.com/index.php?mai ... ucts_id=20

Has a few drawbacks/compromises (mainly the weight and amount of floorspace the mounts eat up inside the "body" of the 550), but it's very well engineered and I feel confident it can handle the heavier gimbal/camera I intend to mount on it soon (once I've selected both).

I was thinking about this one... http://www.quadframe.us/collections/landing-gear/products/200mm-clearance-landing-legs
I also was thinking about retracts...
I remember reading where someone took this QuadFrame and creating retracts from it...
A possible project in my very near future...

Wow... that is a beast! I don't know what your gimbal aspirations are but it looks like there isn't a platform for it on the pictures I saw. That might mean you have to fabricate something. If you hang it directly under the airframe, you will get props and possibly landing gear in the way. Am I reading that right?

I have a much cheaper carbon fiber one that has a platform out front. It extends the gimbal 3" away from where it was. I like Ol Photography's version even if it is a bit heavier. You can see mine in the picture below - although I didn't take the picture to show the landing gear, you can see the GoPro hanging below the near arm. It is extended out 3" from the main body.

Oh... and just so I don't hog more posting space, the question was asked about lights and I decided to put the automobile focused lights on - fairly easy to put them on and take them off so I decided to try them. They are focused so the more in-line you are with them, the brighter they are. You can see that in the picture - the camera is closer to the beam of the one on the right.

I would think an f550 with the AimDroix Extended Arms would look awesome with this landing gear....

Here is a QuadFrame with a 450:

Don't know why the YouTube link doesn't embed itself... Happens sometimes... Try this if it doesn't work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jweF3e_zvjU

PS: I like your f550 set up... Good Luck with it...

Anyone using the OSD MKII? If you are, care to relate your experience?
