Tried the 9" props today

Today i went with the 9" props (DJI Brand), and to be honest, I wasn't impressed....the only thing I can come up with is that if your phantom is heavy, they may help, but I fly mine light, at times with no camera mount or landing gear, more in manual then gps or att. Most people say these really helped them and the flight time increased, but for me, just wasn't there. I admit I never messed with the gains, so that may be why I felt no performance gain.

I think you nailed it on the extra weight issue. I'm turning the 9 inchers because of extra weight of gimbal, camera and 4000 mah or dual 2200 mah Lipo's. This is on the FC40 version of the Phantom 1.
