The little window

I was watching a ytube vid, on the lower left on the screen on the controller there's a little map window showing where the copter is, who needs this, what's it for and why are there 2 lines, one showing the path of the copter and the other line I wondered what its purpose?

If you fly past line of sight that map and the lines are your holy grail! One is the flight path, not as important. The orange line is a straight line back to the home point, very important.
