Hi All -

My colleague and I are developing new rotors for drones to significantly quiet the noise coming from the drones we love to fly. He is a nautical engineer who develops propulsion units for high end ships and I am a plastics engineer who knows all sorts of manufacturing techniques for low and mass production.

I am looking for pro-sumer operators of DJI drones in the Southeast Massachusetts area to test fly our creations. This will involve both inside (sound box) flying as well as "real world" flying. Compensation will only be the state minimum hourly wages, plus unlimited stealth props for your drone. Perhaps food and an adult beverage can be provided.

Not sure the best way to contact me on this forum... I leave that to your creativity.

Sounds interesting im to far away ,curious on a picture or two or is this top secret :)

Interested? Sorry, so are the Asian knock-off manufacturers... no pics, only performance graphs once validated for both noise and flight characteristics. This is Elon Musk SpaceX type Venture. Then we will sell you a pre-production set of blades.
Ha thanks will be keen to ,keep updates coming :)

Why are quieter props necessary?

You don't get something for nothing... What are the trade-offs and side effects?

What role does material play?

A New NASA study shows that the characteristics of drone noise bother people more than most other noises such as lawn mowers, etc. When I fly, I have little interest in the neighbors, but neither do I want to attract attention. There are many things that factor in to why they make the noise they do as the OP knows. I wish the project good luck and keep us posted.

I would imagine that a more rigid blade would be more silent when operated. However the weight need to be equal or lower than stock plastic blades. I would try to make one set in different materials and check the result. Maybe add vortex generators on the suction side :D

OP: You have a message.

If you want to send a set of Phantom 3 propellors to the UK I'm a mechanical engineer with a lot of knowledge of plastic injection mouldings, knowledge in NVH and have access to a sound booth and fully trained in HEAD acoustics Artemis Suite software for analysing recordings!

He's looking for volunteers, not advice, suggestions, or criticism at this point. It sounds like they already have the expertise required, they just need testers and feedback after testing. The are many reasons why one might want to make less noise! Some have already been mentioned! BTW, I am interested in testing, however I live in Western New York state, near the Lake Erie shoreline. Would I still be considered a viable candidate to test? Let me know, and I'll contact you. Thank you.

It's a chat forum. It's what goes on here.

I have questions cause I'm curious like that.

Besides I can decide for myself if, when, and how to respond and it can either be acknowledged or ignored.

Sounds really cool. If you expand to a need in Southeastern Pennsylvania, I'd help, I'd do it for free, except for maybe an adult beverage or 3. I once was a small business owner and I also spent 13 years with Lockheed, I'm pretty savvy with test results and feedback. I'd love to help a small biz succeed. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.
