I get only about 520 feet of range before the picture disappears totally from the screen. What is considered a normal range with standard antennas?
Im using the AVL58 and a Boscam monitor with built in receiver that has two antennas. The AVL58 uses the supplied cloverleaf antenna and the monitor uses the two antennas that came with the monitor and they are not cloverleaf antennas.

Does this sound like a very short range or is that what can be expected with this setup and with the original antennas?

Is there anything else that can be done besides changing antennas? And how much of a difference does better antennas really do?

Any suggestions for good antennas?

Try a combination of a cloverleaf and 4-5 turn helical antennae on the RX, but make sure you get ones with the same polarisation (left hand or right hand) as your TX and with the correct connection type.

You could double your range quite easily with this combination.
