Rookie mistake.
You don't grab the horizontal piece as that allows the Phantom to pivot.
You only hold on to the vertical with a thumb up towards the battery to stabilise it.

I always hand catch mine from the back left leg (upright) with my right ,,I'm left handed,lol and that way if I screw up and the video is on ,,no one will be able to see me get attacked ,,and I can still write checks
