Drone HELIPADS discussion

We’re using an old material tarpaulin, quite heavy, folded four layers thick. It provides a landing zone of approximately 4ft x 4ft or perhaps a bit bigger. It’s not exactly light weight, but my wife/colleague is mentally strong as well as being beautiful and smart. And we’re usually not that far from the Land Rover. It folds up easily, with one side dusty and the other side kept
clean. (It’s been used in the past for macro wild flower photography, where you need to lie flat on the ground without having sharp stones/rocks or prickly bushes compete for your mental attention.)

Any rocks are quickly removed before (or sometimes after) putting it down on the ground. Finding an open spot isn’t always easy, especially one that’s relatively flat, but we usually manage.

The size is great for putting down the backpack, opening it, getting out the drone and rc, and putting on (and removing) the props and ND/PL filter - without the risk of dust, grit, bits of vegetation, etc getting in where it shouldn’t. (All serious photographers know that dust/sand/grit is an equipment killer, as well blurring images if something gets on a lens that shouldn’t be there.) It allows sufficient space if wind moves the drone a bit on landing.

Just before landing, at 6ft to 3ft above, we sometimes get down-draft that will blow one layer of the tarp causing slight creasing - but that’s a minor negative.

We considered a solid board that would fit in the back of the Land Rover, but the tarp’s foldability is preferable and easier to carry.

I don't know where you guys fly that you can't find a flat surface, just hand launch & catch. Leave your dinner tables in the kitchen.
