Yes, that's normal. The screen will go black when the GoPro takes a picture. I was concerned the first time my screen blinked every 2 or 5 seconds until I realized it coincided with the GoPro taking the picture. If you switch to video mode on the GoPro, you won't see the screen go black at all.

Are you saying don't buy a kit cause it's more rewarding to build it myself? Typically I'd agree with you, but in this case I'm looking to get started quickly, but I want to know which will have better quality video.

Yeah, but I don't want to have to use my cell phone for FPV and I want to add goggles in the future. Plus, isn't the GoPro 3+ Black a much better camera? I'd definitly use the higher resolution for zooming/cropping and still get great quality at 1080.
