Why are people crashing these phantoms?

I noticed some used ones on eBay and a large majority reported a crash.
Are these things that hard to maneuver ?

They are easy to maneuver once you learn how to fly. People just need to take the time to read and understand the manual -- and, spend the time learning how to fly safely. When those steps are skipped, a crash is inevitable.

The controls don't look really hard
I know looks are deceiving , maybe they are getting too close to trees?
    Trying to fly in wind??

Maybe they should have worked their way up from quads like the Hubsan X-4, who knows? Things can happen fast in our Phantom Pilots world.

They are easy to fly and therefore you become comfortable too quick which leads you to become complacent or take further risks. In other words - cockiness.
Another reason is spacial (sp?) awareness. Standing at the wrong place can lead to misjudging depth/distances. Eg flying between a goal post.

Phantoms are always ready to fly out of the box but new pilots aren't ready to fly out of the box
