What's the reason for this?

I'll be reading a thread and I know when someone wants to respond to a certain post, they will quote that post and answer. What is the purpose to quote a post and not say anything?

I have seen that done in the past also Monte just to have what they said in
the post stay the same so if they edited it you would see the original post .
