PRESS RELEASE
DJI Showcases Revolutionary Aerial Camera Systems at CES 2014
Product Portfolio Enables a New World of Creative Possibilities in Aerial Images
[Las Vegas, Nevada, January 7, 2014] DJI, a leading developer and manufacturer in unmanned aerial systems (UAS), is showcasing its portfolio of aerial camera systems at CES 2014 for the first time. The company’s advanced aerial systems are easy to use and allow users from professional cinematographers to consumers to create beautiful aerial photos and videos.
“We are excited to be participating in CES for the first time with our comprehensive range of flying solutions that empower people of all skill-levels to take to the skies and capture images that were once out of their reach,” said Frank Wang, chief executive officer of DJI. “Building on our expertise in flight control and gimbal control and stabilization, DJI will continue to raise the bar on industry- leading features and performance for aerial photography and videography technologies to create unprecedented experiences for all users.”
Visitors to DJI’s booth (Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, booths #42006 and 42009) at CES 2014 will have the opportunity to experience a whole new world of creative possibilities offered by DJI’s flying platforms:
• Phantom 2 Vision – the world’s first consumer quadcopter with a built-in high-performance camera capable of high quality photography out of the box
• Phantom 2 – all-in-one ready-to-fly quadcopter featuring FPV (first person view) flying and aerial photography support
• S800 EVO – hex-rotor aerial platform for professional aerial photography
• S1000 – heavy lifting multi-rotor for professional cinematography and photography use
Additionally, DJI also released two new firmware updates for its Phantom 2 Vision. With the firmware update, the flying camera will be able to capture and store pictures in Adobe DNG (Digital Negative) RAW format in the Vision camera. DNG RAW format retains the original image information and allows convenient post-production, offering ultimate creative control of aerial images to photographers.

The second firmware update also equips the Phantom 2 Vision with Ground Station capabilities, turning the Phantom 2 Vision into a fully automated flight system which enables waypoint editing and autonomous waypoint navigation. Users can program their flight path from a PC or an iPad with the 16 way Ground Station system, which gives them the ability to shoot with more precision.

well that answers the question about the ground station. its going to be on the iPad and not via the iPhone vision app.

But why do they mention only firmware for Vision and not for P2? or is it one and the same for them?

Interstingly that goes against what they said in the original press release last year - that screen shot ain't no iPad! http://www.dji.com/phantom-2-vision-wil ... abilities/

I'm going to assume the PR department saw "ground station" and just cut and paste from the standalone ground station kit available for other aircraft in their range.... :?

Well, they said Adobe DNG RAW late december, that didn't happen. Most recent press release (which I haven't been able to find anywhere but on this forum) says DJI HAS released the new FC200 firmware, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere either.

Anybody had any luck locating the actual firmware file for the FC200, which supposedly was released today?

Press release was shared on the DJI phantom owners facebook page....
I just copy/pasted...

the moral of the story is that until its official and the firmware has been installed, nothing is for sure. The one image of the waypoints looks like an iPhone, not an iPad.

Ground Station is an important part of my decision to buy or not buy the P2. The Press Release mentioned GS support for the P2V only. Does that make sense, the P2V only? Anyway I can confirm.

I've been waiting for January 7 to make a decision and now I am on hold until I learn more about GS support.

P2 will definitely have the ground station. You will need the 2.4 data link and an iPad. Its mentioned in the instructions and directly on the Phantom 2's website. Technically you can install everything right now, you just can't fly it until the firmware. If you put a Naza from a Phantom 1 in the P2, it will work. Its only a matter of a firmware issue. The vision upgrade/firmware will be harder.

I would say if you are waiting, don't wait. Buy the P2 and get the ground station with can bus hub and mini iosd package. You don't need the hub but the price makes the iosd almost free. If you are waiting to buy a vision because of the ground station, it might not be bad to wait longer because the big question is if the vision will require additional hardware and iPad or if it will run right off the Vision app. Personally I think thats the major reason why the P2 firmware isn't out yet. I suspect its finished but they want to unleash the vision update at the same time.

The only way I can see the vision working with the app is if you have a screen for waypoints then you go to another screen for FPV. There simply isn't enough room on the iPhone to have a map/waypoints and FPV. I think its going to also be a really dumb downed version of the ground station because power hungry apps have a tendency to run slow and or crash.

PRESS RELEASE
I can't find this press release on the DJI site, on their official Facebook page, or on PRNewswire, where they post their other press releases. They also haven't actually put up a new firmware update. This seems odd - is it consistent with DJI in the past? Have they pulled it from their Facebook page, or am I looking in the wrong place? Can you, or someone else post a link to the actual release?

Thanks.

It has been two days since this "press release", and I cannot find it anywhere on the web. DJI just published release notes on firmware upgrades that don't mention this at all. Assuming that ppdrone copied this from the web, it was either a hoax that was withdrawn or an accidental early release that was withdrawn. I wouldn't assume that anything in it is correct, until DJI actually makes an actual release regarding GPS Waypoints and Adobe RAW.

I have looked for that as well. No luck. The closest thing i have found to ANY communication is the comment under their latest CES post from "Flying Cameras" which looks to be a reputable person / company based on their Facebook page.

Comment: Flying Cameras: "waypoints are coming soon via a firmware update but you didn't hear it from us :) "

I am too "new" to PM you. I am certain you can't post it here. How about putting it on Google Drive, sharing it, and sending a link? Or something similar. I have tried asking about this on their Facebook group and they took one post down and are ignoring two others of mine and one from someone else. Seems like they are late with the update and distracted with CES.

Yeah, this guy has nothing on Colin. Not exactly what I'd call inspiring...

Like others, I'm brandy new to the quad (and RC) world. I watched all the tutorial videos and thought that was the absolute best Customer Support I'd ever seen. Step by step instruction on how to set up and fly. Now? Nothing. Drat!

I downloaded the Ground Station APP from the APP Store on my iPad. Unfortunately it keeps asking for the "bluetooth" hookup, which I don't have. I keep getting the "Connect to the Controller" message, and I can't. Somewhere when I first saw mention of this (and watched a video), it was a kit that came with a CD disk and (I think) a cable. So while I have the app, I don't have the necessary firmware update everyone seems to be talking about. But, the APP looks cool, if we can ever get it.

I just FROSTS me that I watched all those informative tutorials that Colin was in for a week solid, as I waited for my Phantom 2 Vision to arrive. In fact, I sat last night with the box ON the table, watching Colin unpack one as I unpacked MINE. I was following along with everything, but it was already dark out and couldn't go outside, so I quit and waited for this morning. Then, low and behold, when I tried to find the videos to continue my setup - THEY WERE GONE!!!

Great timing eh? :x :x :x

Guess I'll just have to settle for using the manual (that I had to download...) to finish. I don't know anything about Colin's "TV career", but I DO know he did a great job explaining stuff with the Phantom. If he's otherwise a jerk, fine. I won't invite him over for a beer - ha.
