I tried setting waypoints yesterday for a simple three point short flight. Is it meant to complete a circuit or not? That is, should I expect it to come home and land? It didn't do that so I hit the go home button. I would have thought it would come home but I'm assuming it's not intended to work that way.

Nope. Stays in a hover at last waypoint. Then up to you to request auto land or take over manually.
Weird... I flew waypoints for the first time this morning... and it DOES return to home but doesn't descend and land... my 4th and last waypoint was about 30 meters away ... When it got there it did it's little turn and flew back over to me... didn't seem like it returned to its original takeoff point but rather came right over my head and just hovered there waiting for me to click over and take control.
