If you want free, you can't beat Lightworks.

It's professional grade software used by major studios - has 32 and 64 bit versions - Mac, PC and Linux. One limitation of the free version is that it will save in max resolution of 720p. If you want to create 1080 videos, you'll need to fork over $8/mo, $80/yr or $280 outright.

There are excellent tutorial videos to get you started and more advanced tutorials on YouTube.
 
I'm a Mac user, so it was iMovie for me several years ago then I moved to Final Cut Pro X. Brilliant software (if you like the Mac platform).

Thats what I have and I knew nothing about editing video.. I am still learning but its a nice program with tons of features for the price!
