From what I understand, the aircraft must be more than 60 meters away from the remote control for the true RTH to function.
It's 20 meters.

Thanks!! My bad ! Maybe I was thinking 60 feet. That would be close to 20 meters. Also, I guess that 20 meters would be from where the home point was set and not the remote.

I have read where others have crashed because the drone hit something on the way down because it was not over 60 meters away!

Believe that is 20 meters (60 ft).
 
So i cant simulate this by just turning the rc off as it sits on a table?
Go to a large open area and fly more than 20 metres away and try it for real.
It's well documented in the manual and has been done thousands of times by users.
Studying how RTH works and practicing is an important part of learning to fly the Phantom.
