never before has my phantom made such a noise, Di Di Di etc so loud I have put it in garage. How long should this update take?

That noise is normal. Update takes approx. 25 mins. The "di di di di" audible queue changes once the update is complete; confirm that the update was successful via opening the .txt file in root directory of sd card.
