So I was going to update the firmware on my brand new P3P and I got the Phantom upgraded with no problem. I realized that I didn't have an SD card reader to use for upgrading the transmitter and the firmware that came on the transmitter didn't support upgrading via the app.
It turns out that you can actually use the Phantom itself as an SD reader to upgrade the transmitter. Make sure the bin file is on the SD card, connect the Phantom and transmitter via the provided USB cable, power on the phantom and then power on the transmitter. I let it sit for a few seconds and the transmitter went into firmware upgrade mode. Walked away for a few minutes (so I wouldnt have to hear that **** beeping) and when I came back it was all done.
