Thinking of getting Boscam FPV - is this a good idea?

I ordered the Boscam RX-LCD5802 and Immersion 600mw transmitter a few days ago. Will post results of using them after a few test flights in a couple weeks or so.

Note to 'Submariner' - what boat?

Will not work properly because the immersionRC 600mw...

Here is a very cheap FPV setup, you can get 1km+ range with this setup, its a nice start to FPV.
And if you use a directional antenna on the receiver you could go above 2km.

Boscam TS351: http://j.mp/1iwjZzR
Boscam TS353 400mw: http://j.mp/1gJ6t7s
Boscam receiver RC305 5.8Ghz: http://j.mp/1cRoJjy

RC305 + TS353 combo: http://j.mp/1iuhzQ6

Antennas (circular polarized)
cloverleaf antenna to rx: http://j.mp/1arIRFU
Cloverleaf antenna to tx: http://j.mp/1dG8kbW

Boscam 7" RX-LCD5802 5.8GHz Diversity Receiver: http://j.mp/1lZuham
LCD Battery Charger: http://j.mp/1h3CreQ

Just to show how well this setup works here is a video i found on youtube (4.6 km on minute 8:14), in the description is the setup used, and you can read RC305 and TS351, just like this setup:

Well crap I have the boscam monitor in hand and the immersionrc 600mw incoming. Hopefully I can get some decent results. Otherwise you will see one of those in the classifieds section :(

I tested both and i got arround 1.6km max, not bad, but with the ts353 i get better image and range.

Here is a video with a phantom 2 and the ts353, the video records 5KM range!

These j.mp links aren't working for me, are they working for anyone else? GhostMaster, if you read this, maybe you could edit the post with fixed links? THanks :)

They work, wont work if you use tapatalk because this forum messes with the links.

Hmmm...odd, they're working now today. Maybe it was something on my end. Sorry, thanks!

Thank you for the recommendations Ghost. I'm thinking of getting the following FPV setup for the Phantom 2 with GoPro & Zenmuse Gimbal:

DJI iOSD mini
Boscam TS353 400mw: http://j.mp/1gJ6t7s
cloverleaf antenna to rx: http://j.mp/1arIRFU
Cloverleaf antenna to tx: http://j.mp/1dG8kbW
Boscam 7" RX-LCD5802 5.8GHz Diversity Receiver: http://j.mp/1lZuham
LCD Battery Charger: http://j.mp/1h3CreQ

The cloverleaf antennas have four different options. I understand SMA and RP-SMA, but what is W or L type?

Also, would you have any experience with the Skyzone Goggles. Would it work well with the Boscam TS353?
http://www.banggood.com/SkyZone-SKY-01- ... 08646.html

Is there a better set of value FPV goggles what would work with the Boscam TS353?

Is Banggood.com the best online vendor to order from?

W is a straight antenna and L is an l shape from what I can see. Just ordered this setup a few weeks ago hopefully will arrive this week. I got W antennas for the vrx and l for the vtx. All from bang good. They seem fine so far

No worries. Here is a diagram from the BangGood site

Great reference Joel! Any recommendations for helical antennas? If so, would they need to be left or right turn to work with these cloverleaf antennas?

Not too sure on that one. Just getting into the whole FPV thing myself so still learning. Unfortunately I am still waiting on my items to arrive from BangGood (almost a month now) but when they arrive I'll do some tests with what I bought and let you know. BangGood seem to be well priced but postage is crazy slow.

No, the skyzone are the only googles i know with diversity and 32ch, they are the only googles that i know that work with boscam.

+1. I ordered a set on April 4 and they arrived May 7. "backordered" for 2 weeks then about 2 of shipping from Singapore. The whole kit cost me about 60% of what it would have if I'd ordered from a USA supplier, so as long as you aren't in a hurry BangGood works.

I didn't mind, it gave me a chance to learn a lot about the Phantom before I went adding the additional FPV layer.

Joel do you have this video bookmarked? It's not a direct 1-to-1 cabling guide for the exact setup you (likely) have, but if you think you're smart enough to build and solder a FPV kit yourself you should be smart enough to figure out exactly which cables to solder with your kit using the above vid
cheers!

Haha that's the exact video I have bookmarked and is exactly how I plan to install everything. Have an iosd mini on order too (also taking for ever to arrive). Installed FPV in a mates Phantom the other week (minus the iosd mini) and its working like a charm! Very easy to solder everything using the preinstalled cables from DJI.

Looking forward to installing it on my own Phantom now! The wait from Banggood is killing me haha

I had read good thing about the Boscam TS353 at 400mw. But at a shop they insisted I get the TS800 at 1,500mw.... What's best? Isn't the TS800 using more power? Is it going to mess up with the GPS on the Phantom or interfere with something else? Thx

assuming you intend to tap into Phantom power (as opposed to an external battery) then you're correct that the stronger the transmitter the more power it will draw = less flight time.
if you haven't I'd recommend watching this video regarding 5.8Ghz FPV systems. He's geared toward fixed wing planes but the fpv concepts certainly apply to us. One of the quotes that really stuck with me from the video: "200mW transmitter... if you use the right antennas then this transmitter will give you easily a few kilometers of range".
for that reason I personally went with a TS351 200mW Tx and (what I hope is) a good antenna. I'm waiting on a few more parts before I actually do range testing but once I do I'll absolutely be sharing my results.

There are guys all over this board with 400 and 600mW transmitters that are easily pushing the limits of range on the Phantom as it relates to battery life... like, you can get really far away but you have to save enough battery to get back right?
anyway my point is imho you were on track with a 400mW transmitter and 1500 should theoretically be major overkill for a Phantom.
In the RC PLANE world the distances get much greater on the order of miles distant with potential LOS issues if you go behind buildings, trees, mountains, etc. so that type of power might be beneficial... but on a phantom I feel like you're just sucking your Phantom battery needlessly.

don't forget you want good antennas!
