Here's the smallest and cheapest repeater that works well with the FC40 cam ..

its called TP-Link WR703N .. this repeater runs off 5v USB power . it can be modded to have an external antenna , but if soldering isn't ur thing u can buy it already modded with an external antenna ready to boost :)

i just finished adding an antenna to my 703 .. the Wi-Fi in this tiny thing has a 20dB (100 mW) output power which is a lot compared to mobile devices .. and i bet with the sunhans 2.5w booster this lil repeater can be a beast .

this's what it looks like with an external antenna :

I beg to differ... The cheapest is the Tenda A6 ($14,99). Watch out though, only "English version" has the repeater function, the "Chinese version" does not. The case, the circuit board and the box look conspicuously similar. Don't know who knocks who...

And an external antenna like that is about $5.

there are a few clones of tp-link 703 like (Tenda A6 & Vonets) a bit cheaper , but with less features . if you look closely these knockoffs don't have 3g support (usb port) and the wifi power output in both is unknown .. and unlike the tp-link 703 we don't know if the repeater function in these knockoffs would actually work with the FC40 cam :)

Do you think that this mod can be done to other cheap repeaters? I found one on Amazon that I'm about to pull the trigger on because it has an internal battery. I figure if I don't need to attach a power supply, it's one less thing I need to worry about. What do you think, are these repeaters pretty basic?

it's really hard to tell without openin' up the repeater and havin' a look at the board's layout , if internal batt is what u r after check out tp-link MR3040 .. it's small cheap with an internal batt and can be modded with an external antenna ..

a side note : if u r plannin to add an amp/booster .. u will need a power bank , cuz the internal batt in these small repeaters don't have enough juice to power boosters for long . so if i were u i would go with tp-link 703 and use an external power bank with it .

Which battery bank do you recommend? I found a few that do 5v and 12v at the same time but they are huge and run upwards to $100...

look for something that has 2 outputs (two 5v USB ports) or (one v5 usb and 12v) ... and make sure it has 2amps output or more , cuz most boosters need minimum 2 amps to run properly .

if u r planning to use a 6v booster then these power banks will do :

$15

$25

For 12v boosters u'll need something alil more expensive ..

This's the one i have , it's a great power bank that has 3 outputs / flash light / plus a jump starter .. with this power bank i can jump start my car even if it's battery is completely dead .. it actually saved my butt couple times ..lol

Awesome. Want to do the same, but have a question for you. Can you not mount the tp-link on the phantom directly, with a USB power bank to power it?
