Yes that's definitely a few "if's" :) but well explaind thanks.. Just for the record I'm using the same output side you quoted and can get good range with my patch mod..
Well I just found out my imported test pigtail was the culprit. I replaced it with a higher quality cable and the results are much better & consistent.

Test conditions: Fully charged Vision & Extender batteries tested off the top 10-minutes, ImmersionRC w/30dBi attenuator in Peak mode, direct connection via RP-SMA heavy gauge pigtail to Extender, Vision / Extender / Controller / iPad mini all linked.

Results: "i" terminal*: 112.20mw peak, 107.98 nominal / "D" terminal*: 184.78 peak, 177.83 nominal

Interesting thing about the "D" terminal is that it drops to 158.49mw when playing back videoclips over the iPad mini. The "i" terminal doesn't budge when doing the same thing.

Sorry about the earlier numbers, still be interesting to see what other P2V'ers extenders are putting out.

iDrone

* {"i" terminal is closest to the silk screened letter "i" in DJI, and "D" terminal is closest to the letter "D" to avoid left-right ambiguity}

Interesting results.. Thanks iDrone for this testing ;)

Re: Phantom 2 Vision 1.7 KM (5,600 Feet) Long Range Test

1. Theoretically, same spec LHCP antennas should perform the same, but gain dBi is not the only characteristic of antenna. Axial ratio, SWR, beam width should also be considered in terms of FPV performance. In general speaking, helical has better axial ratio & SWR.

2. I guess each weight 15-25g, plus SMA jack, cable, etc.

3. Yes, I flew 2.3 KM with stock camera antennas. I believe it can get >3KM on wifi video link, but 5.8G control link dropped at 2.3 KM. I will try a simple mod on 5.8G transmitter. Once I figure out the 5.8G control link, I will test it again.
You can combine omni & directional patch on ARGtek repeater.

4. Yes, you may use LHCP CL or SPW to replace the omni on repeater, but keep some distance between antennas. I suggest to segregate them min. 13 cm apart to avoid interference between them.

thanks PVFlyer

Really nice video!

Re: Phantom 2 Vision 1.7 KM (5,600 Feet) Long Range Test

Will these work to increase my FPV wifi range?

Blackhawk 2.4 GHz Helical (LHCP) Long Heavy duty version

http://horizonfpvantennas.mybigcommerce ... y-version/

or

2.4 GHz Helical (LHCP) short heavy duty version

http://horizonfpvantennas.mybigcommerce ... y-version/

or would this be better?

2.4 GHz 8 dBi LH Circular Polarized Patch Antenna - 4ft SMA Male Connector

http://www.l-com.com/wireless-antenna-2 ... connector#

My goal is to keep everything simple and as compact as possible. Also I'm not trying to set distance records I would just like some more FPV range. Thanks for any advice from the pros.

Re: Phantom 2 Vision 1.7 KM (5,600 Feet) Long Range Test

i put this in another post

guys in the moorning i buy 2 antenas from horizonfpvantennas, yes they are price buy look excelent quality, they write me this:

Hello Jorge,

Yes the order is in hand , yours is a special as it's LHCP, so its a custom build for you .

You antenna will be upgraded to Gold plated elements as we have just introduced this new spec.
We noticed however that you have not ordered any SP antenna to math with it like this one .

http://horizonfpvantennas.mybigcommerce ... igid-rhcp/
Since this order is going to Mexico it may be worthwhile adding a SP antenna to match up also LHCP

but with LHCP , you need to select the Gold elements option if you need them, other wise they will be
the double wound versions.

Shipping after the Build would be in the beginning on the week.he store will keep you posted on the prograss

Thanks

Hello again Jorge, yes i can sort out a LHCP SP for you in silverplated semi tigid coax ,

with spring steel/ Copper elements , or you can have silver plated or GOLd Plated to match up to the Helical BH+
you have ordered, also if you need a strait on 90 deg connector on this one,

We can ship it all together but i thing the shipping would be more than the store added of only £8.50 to Mexico !!

so best thing to do is I build it for you and pack it all up then get the shipping costs and tell you the difference to send over

It is best to match up a SP with your antenna as there would be nothing to work with it otherwise, using RHCP with is would give a -100 dB missmatch which you do not want, is there a reason you went for LHCP ? , we can change it all the RHCP if you like.

so i buy 2 antennas,

1.- http://horizonfpvantennas.mybigcommerce.com/2-4-ghz-sp-antenna-semi-rigid-lhcp/
2.- http://horizonfpvantennas.mybigcommerce.com/blackhawk-2-4-ghz-helical-lhcp-long-heavy-duty-version/

if this do not work a give up! sell my vision :?

I think the second option "2.4 GHz Helical (LHCP) short heavy duty version" is the best bet. It should give you 1 to 1.5 km FPV range in open field with reasonable beam width. I suggest to put the helical on stock repeater with the common known pigtail mod. I believe the stock repeater may perform the same or even better than some high power repeaters in FPV. Also don't use unnecessary long antenna cable, while every meter cable may drop ~0.8 dB signal strength.

Please keep us posted on your result.

Re: Phantom 2 Vision 1.7 KM (5,600 Feet) Long Range Test

I think the second option "2.4 GHz Helical (LHCP) short heavy duty version" is the best bet. It should give you 1 to 1.5 km FPV range in open field with reasonable beam width. Thank you much. I was hoping you would be the one to respond. I'll order the short one tomorrow. Being in the US shipping from UK may take a week or so. I'll be sure to post the results as soon as I get a chance to try everything out.

I was planning on mounting the antenna on the bar to the left of the stock repeater. Do you see any problems with this or interference issues? Also I'm assuming the helical is fairly directional so I'll need to figure out a mounting solution where I can adjust the position on the fly. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks again for the input!

Update: I should be able to grab the base of the Helical with an additional phone holder.

Re: Phantom 2 Vision 1.7 KM (5,600 Feet) Long Range Test

One more Q, mainly to educate myself and have a rebuttal if the company selling the antenna asks why I want LHCP.

How can you tell the antenna in the P2V camera is a LHCP vs RHCP?

The short version is with 54 degree beam width, which should not be too difficult aiming the aircraft.

Re: Phantom 2 Vision 1.7 KM (5,600 Feet) Long Range Test

I should be able to grab the base of the Helical with an additional phone holder attached to the bar on the controller so aiming shouldn't be an issue like you say.

This is called truncated corner microstrip patch. LHCP is identified by the way of truncated corner and signal feed line.

Here's a link to the guy from rc groups that make antennas if any of you are interested he came highly recommended by ibcrazy

He will make them left and right handed

Here is my email to them.

I need a 2.4 GHz Helical (LHCP) antenna to upgrade the FPV wifi range extender that connects to the Phantom 2 Vision's truncated corner microstrip patch antenna in the camera. I'm looking for the smallest package possible with a 9dBi minimum. What do you suggest and how long will it take to have one ready.

I like this one but it doesn't say if it's LHCP. http://www.fpvlr.com/store/dettaglio_ar ... rticolo=17

I like the size of this one but it's 5.8 Ghz and not the required 2.4 Ghz. Is it possible to make this one a 2.4 Ghz LHCP? http://www.fpvlr.com/store/dettaglio_ar ... rticolo=26

Thank you!

The white helical http://www.fpvlr.com/store/dettaglio_ar ... rticolo=17 shown in the picture is LHCP. I guess 6-turn is around 10.5 dB, though it does not mention about gain.

Parsitic Disk Helix looks very interesting as well. If a custom 2.4G LHCP available, I bet it's also half the size of standard helical.

I am in for the smaller one. It seems left hand on the photo. If he makes 2.4 ghz that would be cool. I think the white one is too big. I searched the whole internet and there are realy few ones which are much bigger compare to this one.
