I am a novice pilot. Have set up the quadcopter and calibrated compass as directed. Copter has gone through its setup routine and is in communication with the controller. Copter is on, idling and ready to fly, blinking constant green. When throttle up, the copter tips backwards and scoots along ground. What's up? Is the compass not calibrated correctly?....Perhaps been magnetized and needs to be replaced? (The quadcopter flew and hovered successfully, once.)

Sounds more like you have props on wrong and one side is lifting up and the other is pulling down. Make sure the props are correct (does not apply to Phantom 2's since they can't be put on wrong)

Go into Assistant software go to -> Basic -> Aircraft - and make sure that "Quad rotor X" is selected. (second box from left)

I thought that was a fixed default.

How much power are you applying.

It is very common for beginners to NOT apply enough power at lift-off.

It may seem counter intuitive to some, so if he is just applying just enough power to 'dance on the skids' this can happen.
