Severely limited range

I had my first flight with my P3P away from all interference and trees this weekend and still started loosing signal at about 2000 feet or 650 meters. I had a clean line of sight to the bird and still didn't get a range much further than what I can get in town surrounded by homes and business blasting out wifi.

I have an Acer tablet on airplane mode and GPS off. The controller was fully charged. I had the antenna parallel and pointed as close to 90 degrees from the bird as I could.

What could I be doing wrong? Is it possible some P3P's are defective in some way where their range is seriously limited?

What altitude were you flying at?

For best results you should try it at 400' and see what happens

I have owned alot of RC models over the last 20 years. This is about as nice as it gets, I look forward to the next few years with Object avoidance and zoom cameras... I would simply try to re-position your antennas and fly lower for testing purposes, change locations. I doubt anything at all is wrong with your P3.
