Nowhere can I find an explanation of how to connect the ground end box to the ipad.
My ipad has one and only one, mini usb port.
The ground end has a power lead with connector on one end, and two bare ends on the other.
So what do I do with the bare ends?

This video shows nothing about connecting anything to the ipad.

Doing a little more searching I found this site very helpful.

The last photo on the page shows the ground end connected to separate battery.

So do I assume correctly then that the BTU acts as a wireless link to the ipad?
What's the range on it?

Correct, maybe 20-30ft or so. You can use the iPad interface or the PC software, just not both at the same time.

To power the groundstation you will need a separate battery. If you have standard lipos around like for a P1 you can use one of those with an inexpensive adaptor. If you don't have one of those then you can use a USB power bank this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AANMVNQ/ref ... MOHW&psc=1 (just plug in the groundstation's USB cord to that)

Its the BTU that connect wirelessly via bluetooth !, on the iPad - & its direct via wire USB when you have a PC.... ;)

This my setup so I don't wander out of Bluetooth range with the iPad, as its alway next to it!! - Plus very portable as is!

Its just velcro'd to the case and the tripod - simples.....

The GS RX runs on a sep 3cell lipo... see my pic of my setup... had full 2km WP flights using this setup, and i use it on "all flights" as a manual telemetry read out for height, speed and flight battery levels inc warnings it makes a great "Claxon" noise when these go off. Its great!

When you use the GS for "manual telemetry", how do you set it up in the iPad? Do you initiate a mission and then cancel it once the Phantom has taken off? I can't quite figure this out....

No need to run a mission, just turn it on , it connects and you just fly - manually - as normal - you just see the info displayed as standard... it really is a "must have" on a Phantom FC40 or Phantom 1 :D All that telemetry you get... :)
