Picture perfect auto water landing was sickening.

So why is this thread generic? Seems pretty specific to me. If I'm posting in the wrong place or doing something else wrong in my endeavor to understand my loss, someone please let me know.

Generic as in not spam, not porn, not trolling. It's a legitimate thread.

The poster can always wipe out an OP himself using the tools available to him.

Mod., please delete this post
Sorry for the confusion fellers.
I wasn't requesting that the thread be deleted! Haha.
I was requesting that my post be deleted.
I began to type a post, then changed my mind, so was asking a mod to delete it.

I am not aware of the ability to delete my own post. How do you do it?

Did you get an opportunity to review my flight log? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
At 4m 32s in your log, I see you used the DJI GO auto land feature. That told your Phantom to land at its current location (which is what it did). If you would have held down the RTH button instead, it would have flown back to the home point before landing.

Thanks for the investigation. I need to study and practice more before flying over water again. I'm not sure of the command to Auto Land but I always swiped the arrow pointing to the H before to "return to home" and it always did. Is it possible I used that command but something told the machine that it should Auto Land instead or do you think I inadvertently used s different command?

Wow, 400'+ Away and 14' up any kind of error, scary.
I see we now need to have are own Bird Dogs!
Different Command, probably not, but it is what the app tells the remote what to send out?
Sorry man, that sucks, I still have a missing PV2+.

There are two icons on the left side of DJI GO. One auto takes off and auto lands. The other one (with the "H") initiates RTH. Is it possible that you swiped the wrong icon?

Thanks much. I believe you are correct. I have not been able to duplicate without the drone. I assume the auto takeoff icon turns into auto land after airborne.

I am very appreciative of all of the thoughts and help on my issue. Lessons learned > 1) Better understanding of all controls. 2) More practice before flying over water. 3) Never, ever take your eyes off of your quad or the camera screen. 4) Do not get distracted. Thanks much! Now that I've learned something, I think I'll order my replacement drone.

@Nauti Bird Sorry about the loss. Unfortunately, we've heard this story dozens of times. We've lost one in a river, and it is a sinking and terrible feeling.

If you're going to be doing flying over and around water (or any other unforgiving terrain), you may wish to consider our WaterStrider product. I just recently started a detailed thread dedicated to it. Check it out. It surely would have saved your drone for a lot less money and hassle.

How do you cancel RTH again?

Due to the number of crashes related to this feature, in my opinion, the manual is part to blame. I always thought this very important subject in the manual was poorly written in Chinese, then poorly translated into English. If you just read it the way it is written it really makes no sense. But it is such an important topic it bears unpacking:

1.) "Aircraft automatically descends and lands if RTH (Return To Home) is triggered when the aircraft flies within a 20 meter (65 feet) radius of the Home Point."

So, if you trigger RTH when the bird is within a 20-meter radius of the Home Point, she will come down and land where it is within that radius when you trigger the RTH (not the actual Home point marked with GPS).

2.) "Aircraft will stop ascending and immediately return to Home Point if you move the throttle stick if the aircraft reaches 20 meters (65 feet) altitudes or beyond during failsafe."

(Holy Cow! WTF!) I think what they were trying to explain that if the bird is outside the 20-meter radius when RTH is triggered it will return to the RTH point marked with GPS... But I'm really not sure, it is just incomprehensible.

DJI should hire some Brits and Americans to translate the manuals into English for them.
