Phantom Tx & Rx with other systems

I have an extra DJ6 controller with no receiver and an SR6 controller with receiver but is currently being used in my phantom 1.5

We are building an autonomous drone for a school project and I am wondering if I would be able to test the system with using the DJI transmitter instead of having to buy an extra transmitter and receiver just for this. The parts they will be connecting with is a Q Brain 4-in-1 ESC, APM 2.6, and Raspberry Pi.

I think the SR6 tx/rx combo might work. I believe it has PPM output which the APM can take in.
If you use the DJ6 and the corresponding receiver, it would require adding a S-BUS to PPM converter.
