Phantom is closer than it appears - illusion or fact?

Object avoidance would be great, but until then, do you fully trust your FPV when flying it towards an object?
And in my case, the object was about 3000 ft away, so do you rely on FPV to know you are at a safe distance, say 100 ft from the object?
Can there not be delay that causes you to misjudge where you really are?
The P3P FPV delay is roughly 200 milliseconds, enough time to travel 9 feet at 30 mph. Best to initially approach your object from an elevation above your object while flying towards it, and then, when directly above at a safe height, looking down, move what your telemetry shows is 100 feet away from that center, and then safely circle it in a cork screw down, if the circle view from above the top of the object angled down isn't good enough. Practice circling around objects from above beforehand, to get the technique down. Perfect circles takes practice.
