How can you tell when the aa batteries need replacing in the control unit

The small green light next to the power switch will start flashing red and the controller will start beeping.

If it helps, I get about 30-40 flights on each charge of my rechargeable AA's. And then I still dont get the beeping..I just recharge out of precaution. rechargeables only have so many charge/discharge cycles so I dont waste by charging after every flight
